Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum, London is a repository for collections made world-wide for all groups of organisms, both living and fossil, as well as for minerals. It has a special responsibility for the UK national natural history collections.

Although the Museum carries out research across all areas of natural history, its main strength is in systematics – naming, describing and classifying the natural world. As a result, it produces large numbers of biodiversity identification tools.

The Museum’s wide range of learning activities are largely UK-focussed and are aimed in particular at engaging and enthusing children and young people through educational contact and via the World Wide Web. Working with learned and amateur societies as well as the general public is increasingly important and the Natural History Museum is a leader in the fields of citizen science and science communication.
