University of Tartu (UT) is the oldest, largest and leading university in Estonia, founded in 1632 by the Swedish King Gustavus II Adolphus. At present it includes 10 faculties, 4 research institutes, 4 colleges and a Culture Academy, with more than 70 departments, institutes, clinics and other institutions. The total number of students is about 18,000, with a teaching staff of 1,400; about 3,800 publications are published annually.

The Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences of UT carries on systematic and ecological research on plants and fungi; it is also the foremost department of higher education in the same field. The research teams of the Institute participate in the Centre of Excellence in Biodiversity approved by the Minister for Education and Research of Estonia.

The main effort in KeyToNature is concentrated in user experience and feedback, i.e. carrying out practical activities on identification of organisms using interactive identification keys, and getting feedback and suggestions from end-users. Second largest effort by UT is made in the dissemination and exploitation activities, including the organization of the Interim workshop “KeyToNature: interactive approaches to biodiversity education” in Sept-Oct 2009 in Tartu. UT is also the data providing partner in the project consortium, providing identification keys and secondary data for lichens and plants.
